How to Find Affordable Pet Health Insurance

Not only are there lots of pet insurance companies and plans out there but every dog owner’s definition of “affordable” is different. Here are a few things you should know about making pet insurance more affordable.

Pet insurance can cost as little as $10 or more than $50 per month although the majority of plans are between $20 and $40 per month, about the same as your low end monthly cell phone bill.

Pets aged 8 weeks through about 5 years usually get the best rates and premiums may increase as your pet gets older.

Although there are a number of factors that determine the cost, in general you can make pet insurance more affordable by:

* Choosing a higher deductible
* Choosing a higher co-pay
* Taking advantage of any pet insurance discounts for which you may be eligible
* Choosing a lower annual maximum
* Paying annually instead of monthly
* Choosing not to take routine coverage

Remember, the idea behind pet insurance is to share in the cost of veterinary care with you. The more of the veterinary costs you absorb through things like a higher deductible, the cheaper and more affordable your pet insurance will be.

Discounts Make Pet Insurance More Affordable

Some companies also provide discounts on pet insurance if you:

* Insure multiple pets
* Enroll in their employee benefits program
* Get your cat or dog micro chipped
* Work full or part-time in a veterinary clinic or hospital
* Insure a service dog

You may or may not qualify for some of these discounts but it won’t hurt to ask, and if you are eligible they can definitely make your pet insurance more affordable.
